“As far as notebooks and netbooks go, it’s still an x86 world. The inability to run standard x86 operating systems makes any Arm-based device a nonstarter for consumers and business alike,” Olds said. Smartbooks could take off if the software ecosystem surrounding Linux operating systems were to expand, he said.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform will support a number of operating systems,Inspiron 6000 battery, including Google’s upcoming Chrome OS, Kressin said. Snapdragon-based smartbooks will become available by the fourth quarter, he said.

It’s still early to say how Dell(Latitude D600 Battery)’s contribution will affect the smartbook market, but it’s clear that Intel and Microsoft will have something to think about, especially since almost all netbook makers will probably experiment with the ARM and Linux platform for some of their upcoming portable PCs.

In yet another attempt to diversify, Nokia also plans to offer more sophisticated hardware, in the form of a mini-laptop or Netbook BTP-43D1 Battery –last week it announced the new device, dubbed the Nokia Booklet 3G (watch a video here). At the event in Germany on Wednesday it announced that it will ship the mini laptop in the fourth quarter with a list price tag of 575 euros, or about $817.

What makes Nokia’s Netbook different from others in the category is that the device will have GPS embedded to provide access to Nokia’s Ovi Maps software and service.

The main SpaceBook appears to shave almost 5 pounds, or almost a third off the W700ds’ weight.

The SpaceBook’s advantage in price would be much less drastic. The W700ds, which listed at $5,100 at release last year, can now be purchased between $3,100 and $3,900 online, compared with the anticipated $3,000 price for the SpaceBook.

The first generation of tablet PCs and MIDs were saddled with processors that, while designed for portability, were not really optimized for low power and extended battery life, nor for serious graphics and media applications. But thanks to a new generation of low-voltage processors, such as Intel’s Atom, nVidia’s Tegra, and Qualcomm’s SnapDragon, the possibility of creating a mini-tablet or smartpad with good Toshiba PA3284U-1BAS battery life and media-processing capabilities could soon become a reality.

One of the processors leading the charge in this smartpad space is nVidia’s Tegra; I have especially been watching its use in the new Zuneplayer from Microsoft. If you look at the Zune, it looks a lot like the AppleiPod touch in that it has a 3.2-inch touch screen and is optimized for music and video. And it has a new UI and is connected to the new Zune back-end service engine, which is similar to iTunes from Apple(Apple Laptop Batteries ).

It is not a stretch here to think that Microsoft could create a 9- or 10-inch version using Tegra, and create Microsoft’s own mini-tablet platform and enter the smartpad race. The Tegra would be a great processor for this new type of smartpad since it has low voltage requirements and HD graphics capability built in.
